Beaverhead River Fishing Report          July 13, 2008

July 13, 2008

The Beaverhead has been holding up well, despite the pressure on the river.  With the Madison and other rivers now fishing well, there will be less pressure on the Beaverhead.  The most popular float and best fishing for Brandon was High Bridge to Pipe Organ. Stopping in the side channels and working the holes proved to be very successful.  Brandon's advice is to get on the river early or late morning. The most popular holes on the river do crowd up quickly, so you want to plan your day to give you the best shot.

Yellow sallies were very thick on the river with deep nymphing proving to be the best option, though Brandon's clients have managed to hook some fish on DRIES!!!  Fish on the surface--it's July in Montana.  Stick to the basics, because you don't need to get fancy on the Beaverhead.

Dan guided on the Beaverhead two weeks ago and had very good fishing.  Dry fly fishing started with midges in the morning, followed by little yellow sallies and smaller PMDs in the afternoon, with the streamer fishing being off and on, with some excellent streamer days.

Well, just like all rivers in SW Montana, there is plenty of water over the hill in Dillon. The Beaverhead at Barretts is flowing at 809 cfs and is stable: Beaverhead River Flow at Barretts, which makes for great floating conditions. When floating, stop and work the holes.  There are still a lot fish stacked up!

Brandon and a buddy fished the Beaverhead last Thursday and had a great day.  It was basically all nymphing, with the San Juan worm, the bubble back PT, and PMD nymphs all working.  The key over the hill is deep and dirty.  Fish two nymphs with 3 size #1 split shots.  Fish all the drop offs and edges. As the flows begins to rise focus on the inside bends and edges as the fish begin to move away from the heavy current.

Streamer fishing was a bust, with a few chasers but hardly anything to mention.
